This week’s Village Wild video series, presented by Dietrich Law, takes us deep into the rugged wilderness near Avery Lake in Ontario, where two lynx were caught in a rare and noisy encounter.
The video, originally posted to Facebook by Nicole Lewis, captures the intense howling and wailing—known as caterwauling—between the two wild cats. It’s a sound you won’t want to miss.
While driving near the Ontario-Michigan border, Lewis stumbled upon what appeared to be a territorial standoff between the lynx. Though these majestic animals are an uncommon sight in Michigan, they are more common in Ontario’s Dinorwic Region, which isn't far from where the encounter took place.
According to Ontario Parks, lynx are a particularly elusive species, so seeing two of them engaged in such an interaction is both unusual and fascinating.
The exact reason for the lynx face-off remains unclear, but it's likely a territorial dispute. These wild cats are known for their strong territorial instincts, and when two meet in the same area, tensions can rise quickly.
Although the video dates back to May 2018, it’s still a remarkable moment from the wild that’s too good not to share. Tune in to Village Wild each week for more thrilling wildlife videos, and get ready to explore nature’s untamed side!
