This week as part of our Village Wild video series we're featuring a video link submitted by Alex Smith.
Shot in Lindsay, Ontario and posted to the YouTube channel Ontario Trail Cam Captures, the footage shows a group of American Toads engaging in a reproductive behaviour called amplexus.
During amplexus, the male toad grasps the female's body from behind with its front legs, forming a tight embrace. This embrace causes the female to release her eggs which are then fertilized by the male externally.
Toads will often return to the same breeding sites every year. Females will lay up to 15,000 black and cream coloured eggs in two long strings.
