This week as part of our Village Wild video series, presented by Dietrich Law, we're featuring a video submitted by Randy Huffman.
The video features Huffman's recent wild encounter, when he spotted a massive Massassaga rattlesnake crossing the road near the Bruce Peninsula, north of Stokes Bay, while driving.
Watch as Huffman stands just four feet away from a massive snake, showcasing its impressive size as it gracefully moves across the roadway.
"Although not on the endangered species list, they are a threatened species and protected. I have seen many rattlesnakes the past few years, but this particular one was bigger than most and probably around six years old," said Huffman.
Once common throughout Ontario, the rare and elusive Massasauga rattlesnake now inhabits only a few areas. Bruce Peninsula National Park safeguards crucial Massasauga habitats, making it one of the last strongholds for this species.
Despite being venomous, the Massasauga is highly misunderstood. These snakes are actually quite shy and timid. If you spot one in the wild, consider yourself fortunate.
While encounters are rare, it's crucial to maintain a safe distance and admire them from afar. Remember, snakes play a vital role in our ecosystem, so let's coexist respectfully.
