This week’s Village Wild video series, presented by Dietrich Law, takes us to Diamond Lake in Johnson Township where local resident, Tom McClelland's trail cam captured a stealthy bobcat stalking an unknown animal.
Spotting a bobcat is an exhilarating milestone for wildlife enthusiasts. Known for their secretive nature and striking appearance, these elusive predators are rarely seen in the wild, making this week’s submission all the more exciting.
If you ever encounter a bobcat, it’s important to know how to stay safe. The Government of Ontario recommends the following tips:
- Never approach the animal, especially if it’s near a kill or with young
- Never offer it food
- Do not run—this could trigger its instinct to chase
- Stay together if you’re with others and act as a group
- Face the animal, speak firmly, and back away slowly, ensuring it has an escape route
- Avoid crouching or hiding; instead, try to appear larger
- Keep your eyes on the bobcat and never turn your back
- If it doesn’t flee, assert yourself by shouting, waving your arms, or throwing objects
