Memories of Mauritius leave lasting impression

Mauritius is more than just a destination - it’s a place where diverse cultures live in perfect harmony, creating a vibrant tapestry of traditions, languages, and cuisines

Mauritius is one of those places that stirs the soul - a tiny island nation in the Indian Ocean, where every corner is brimming with beauty and charm. From the moment I stepped off the plane and felt the warm tropical breeze, I knew this was going to be a trip I’d never forget. What followed was a whirlwind of discovery, relaxation, and a deep connection to this magical place.

First impressions: From Canada to paradise

The journey to Mauritius from Canada is a long one, but it’s well worth it, especially if you make the most of it with a stopover. Two airlines, Emirates and Turkish Airlines, offer free stopover programs that can turn a long journey into an extended adventure. I recommend to break up the trip with a stopover in Dubai, courtesy of Emirates. Spending a couple of days in Dubai, exploring its futuristic marvels, is the perfect way to kickstart the adventure. When I arrived in Mauritius, the island welcomed me with open arms. As the plane descended, I was greeted by a view of emerald-green mountains framed by the bluest ocean I’ve ever seen - a sight that immediately filled me with excitement.

Exploring the island: From coast to jungle

Mauritius may be small, but it’s packed with diverse landscapes and activities. My exploration began in Grand Baie, a lively town in the north of the island. Often called the “St. Tropez of Mauritius,” Grand Baie has a young, trendy vibe that’s impossible to resist. The streets are lined with shops, cafes, and markets, and the energy is contagious. I spent hours wandering through the Central Market, where the air was thick with the scent of spices and the chatter of locals. It’s also a street food paradise, and dholl puri quickly became my favorite snack - a delicious flatbread filled with curried split peas, chutney, and pickles.

From the vibrant streets of Grand Baie, I ventured into the natural beauty of Black River Gorges National Park. Located in the south, this national park is a must-visit for nature lovers. The hiking trails lead you through dense forests, past cascading waterfalls, and up to viewpoints that offer breathtaking panoramas of the island’s rugged interior. The park is a peaceful contrast to the lively coast, and I found myself completely immersed in the serenity of nature.

A taste of culture and nature’s wonders

Mauritius isn’t just about beaches and palm trees - there’s a rich culture to discover as well. A visit to Chamarel, a small village in the southwest, is a must. This area is famous for the Seven-Coloured Earth, a natural phenomenon where the earth’s sands appear in vibrant shades of red, purple, and orange. It’s a sight that’s as mesmerizing as it is unique, and one that perfectly captures the island’s magical quality.

After exploring the colourful dunes, I couldn’t resist stopping at a nearby rum distillery. Mauritius is known for its rum, made from the island’s abundant sugarcane. The tasting was a delightful experience, offering a deep dive into the flavours of the island. If you’re a fan of smooth, flavourful spirits, you’ll definitely want to bring a bottle (or two) home.

In the evenings, the island comes alive with the rhythm of Sega, Mauritius’s traditional dance. I had the chance to watch a performance at one of the local venues, and it was impossible not to be swept up in the energy. The dancers, dressed in vibrant colours, moved with a joy that was infectious. By the end of the night, I found myself joining in, laughing and twirling under the stars - an experience that left me with a smile long after the music had faded.

Travel tips and timing

When planning a trip to Mauritius, timing is key to making the most of your visit. The island’s best weather is from May to December, during the cooler, drier months. Temperatures during this time are comfortably warm, ranging from 24-30°C (75-86°F), perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, snorkelling, and exploring the island.

If you’re visiting between January and April, be prepared for warmer, more humid conditions, with occasional rain showers. However, this time of year also brings lush, green landscapes that are incredibly beautiful. Plus, the water is warm and inviting, making it ideal for swimming and water sports.

My top resort recommendations

Choosing where to stay in Mauritius can be a challenge, given the island’s array of luxurious resorts, each offering its own unique experience. After much consideration, I’ve narrowed down my top two recommendations for different kinds of travelers.

1. Lux Grand Baie: If you’re looking for a trendy, vibrant place to stay, Lux Grand Baie is an absolute must. This resort has a youthful energy that’s hard to match, with multiple pools, including a rooftop pool that’s an Instagrammer’s dream. The rooftop even has a swing where you can relax while soaking in panoramic views of the ocean. During the day, a DJ sets the perfect vibe, turning the rooftop into a lively hub of music and fun. It’s the kind of place where you can feel the pulse of the island, and it’s perfect for those who want to be in the middle of the action.

2. The Oberoi Mauritius: For those seeking a more tranquil and relaxed atmosphere, The Oberoi Mauritius is the ideal choice. This resort is all about understated elegance and serenity. When I visited, it was fully booked, yet I rarely encountered other guests—a testament to the space and privacy the resort offers. The Oberoi is set on a lush, historical site, with beautifully landscaped gardens and plenty of spots to spread out and unwind. It’s a haven of peace, where you can truly disconnect and relax, surrounded by the natural beauty of Mauritius.

Final thoughts

Mauritius is more than just a destination - it’s a place where diverse cultures live in perfect harmony, creating a vibrant tapestry of traditions, languages, and cuisines. This island has a laid-back Caribbean feel, where time seems to slow down, allowing you to truly savour every moment. Whether you’re strolling through bustling markets, lounging on sun-drenched beaches, or hiking through lush jungles, there’s a relaxed vibe that makes you feel right at home.

For those planning an African safari, as I did with my group, Mauritius is an ideal addition to your itinerary. It’s just a four-hour flight from South Africa, making it a convenient and rewarding stop after the excitement of the African plains. Imagine capping off your safari with a few days in paradise, where you can unwind, reflect on your adventures, and soak in the beauty of the Indian Ocean.

As I boarded the plane back to Canada, I knew that Mauritius had left a lasting imprint on my heart. The memories of its beauty, warmth, and the unforgettable experiences I had will always bring a smile to my face. If you’re looking for a paradise that offers something truly special, Mauritius is waiting to welcome you with open arms. Whether you choose the lively Lux Grand Baie or the serene Oberoi Mauritius, you’re in for a trip that you’ll treasure forever.

Top Tips for Visiting Mauritius

  1. Book All-Inclusive Packages: While Mauritius offers a range of dining options, booking an all-inclusive package can be a smart choice, especially given the exchange rate for Canadians. Dining out and purchasing extras can add up quickly, so an all-inclusive deal helps keep your budget in check, particularly if you're coming from a more affordable destination like South Africa.

  2. Leave the Vape at Home: Mauritius has strict laws against vaping, and bringing a vape into the country is prohibited. Make sure to leave your vape at home to avoid any legal issues at customs.

  3. Driving on the Left: If you plan to rent a car to explore the island, remember that Mauritians drive on the left side of the road, just like in the UK. It might take a bit of getting used to if you're accustomed to driving on the right, but it's worth it for the freedom to explore at your own pace.

  4. Be Sun Smart: The tropical sun in Mauritius is strong, so make sure to pack plenty of high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Reapply sunscreen often, especially if you’re spending time in the water, to protect your skin from sunburn.

  5. Respect Local Customs: Mauritius is a multicultural island with a mix of religions and traditions. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly and be mindful of local customs. This shows respect for the diverse cultures that make Mauritius such a unique and harmonious place.

  6. Plan Ahead for Excursions: Popular excursions like catamaran cruises, dolphin watching, and guided hikes in Black River Gorges National Park can fill up quickly. To avoid disappointment, it’s a good idea to book these activities in advance, especially during the high season.

  7. Explore Beyond the Beaches: While Mauritius is famous for its stunning beaches, don’t miss out on exploring its other attractions. The island’s interior is full of lush forests, waterfalls, and cultural sites that offer a deeper understanding of Mauritius’s rich heritage.

As ever if you want to go on a safari or just visit the island of Mauritius as myself or one of my trusted well trained agents will help you plan.

Next week I will tell you all about my long anticipated South African trip in Mandela’s footsteps. In the words of my favourite client …"Sandwiched in between the extremes of the black struggle were the safaris that bookmarked the beginnings and endings of each day. I didn’t even know I wanted to see wild animals but I was enthralled by the skill of our drivers and the thrill of seeing lions, giraffes, elephants and deer like “substances" up close. Never knowing what would happen next was exciting!
