Last-minute guide to attending the Paris Summer Olympics

A a last-minute guide to help you navigate the city, find accommodation, and enjoy the Olympic spirit without a hitch

The Summer Olympics have already begun, and if you’ve just decided to make a spontaneous trip to Paris, don’t worry! Here’s a last-minute guide to help you navigate the city, find accommodation, and enjoy the Olympic spirit without a hitch.

1. Last-minute flights: Think outside the box

With Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport likely overwhelmed, consider flying into alternative nearby cities such as Lille, Lyon, or Brussels. From these locations, you can take high-speed trains like the TGV or Thalys to reach Paris efficiently. This strategy can save you time and reduce stress compared to navigating the crowds at CDG.

2. Finding accommodation: Flexible options

If central Paris is fully booked, don’t panic. Check for availability in the surrounding suburbs like Saint-Denis, Montreuil, or Vincennes. These areas are well-connected by the RER and metro systems. Additionally, consider short-term rental platforms like Airbnb or Booking.com for last-minute deals. Hostels and guesthouses can also provide budget-friendly options with the added benefit of local insights from hosts.

3. Public transport: Your best ally

Paris’s public transport network is extensive and reliable. Purchase a Paris Visite travel card for unlimited travel on metros, buses, and trams within designated zones. Always stay aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings secure, particularly in crowded areas. Late-night travel is generally safe, but stick to well-populated carriages and avoid isolated stations.

4. Safety tips for public transport

Stay alert, especially in crowded areas. Keep your bags zipped and in front of you. If you feel unsafe or encounter an emergency, seek out the SOS buttons available in metro stations. Use apps like Citymapper or RATP for real-time navigation assistance and updates.

5. Dining and shopping: Embrace the local scene

To avoid overpriced tourist spots, venture into local neighbourhoods for dining and shopping. Visit markets like Marché Bastille or Marché des Enfants Rouges for fresh produce and artisanal goods. Local bistros and brasseries offer authentic French cuisine at reasonable prices.

6. Sightseeing: Avoid the mainstream crowds

While the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre are must-sees, their lines can be daunting. Book tickets online to save time or explore lesser-known attractions such as the Musée Rodin, the Catacombs, or the charming streets of Montmartre. Early mornings and late afternoons are usually less crowded for sightseeing.

7. Cultural etiquette and language

A little effort in speaking French goes a long way. Basic phrases like “Bonjour” (Hello), “Merci” (Thank you), and “S’il vous plaît” (Please) are appreciated. Politeness and patience can enhance your interactions with locals.

8. Health and safety

Stay hydrated, wear comfortable shoes, and apply sunscreen. With large crowds, keep an eye on your belongings and adhere to local health guidelines. Travel insurance is advisable to cover any unexpected medical needs.

9. Eco-friendly travel

Take advantage of Paris’s bike-sharing system, Vélib', to explore the city sustainably. Refill your water bottle at public fountains, and choose eco-friendly accommodations whenever possible.

10. Last-minute tickets and events

Check the official Olympics website and social media for last-minute ticket releases or secondary marketplaces. Sometimes, local ticket vendors and fans might be selling tickets near event venues. Be cautious of scams and only purchase from trusted sources.

11. Hop-on hop-off bus tour: A must-try experience

One of the best ways to see Paris is by taking the hop-on hop-off bus tour. It's a favourite of mine and offers a convenient way to explore the city’s major attractions at your own pace. With informative commentary and flexible routes, you won’t regret giving it a go!

By staying flexible and informed, you can enjoy a spontaneous and memorable trip to the Paris Summer Olympics. Embrace the excitement, soak in the culture, and make the most of your last-minute adventure in one of the world’s most captivating cities. Bon voyage!
