Looking for the perfect road trip destination from Ontario this spring? Just across the border from Gananoque, ON, Boldt Castle—set on Heart Island in the breathtaking Thousand Islands region—is a must-visit landmark steeped in history, romance, and architectural grandeur.
Opening for the 2025 season on May 10th, this iconic destination invites visitors to step into a story of love and loss while exploring its magnificent halls, scenic gardens, and the impressive Boldt Yacht House.
Located near Alexandria Bay, NY, Boldt Castle is accessible only by water, welcoming visitors from both Canada and the U.S. via tour boat or personal pleasure craft. This spring, Canadian visitors can head to the Thousand Islands to catch a ferry, enjoying a picturesque journey through the region’s intricate island network on the way to this historic site.
As your boat approaches Heart Island, home to Boldt Castle, you’ll be greeted by the striking sight of a full-scale Rhineland-style palace rising from the St. Lawrence River.
The castle’s history is as captivating as its architecture. Built in the early 1900s by George C. Boldt as a testament to his love for his wife, Louise, the grand estate was intended to be their dream summer home. However, in 1904, Louise passed away suddenly, and a heartbroken Boldt halted construction, never returning to the island.
For decades, the castle remained abandoned until 1977, when the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property and began restoring it for future generations. Today, visitors can wander through the opulent interiors and stroll the beautifully manicured grounds, experiencing the grandeur and tragedy of one of the region’s most legendary landmarks.
Whether you're drawn by the history, the romance, or the breathtaking scenery, a visit to Boldt Castle promises an unforgettable experience—one that will leave you enchanted and eager to return year after year.
