Following on from my last two articles - one exploring the beauty of travelling within Canada, and another focused on ethical international travel options - it’s time to dive into one of my absolute favourite ways to explore the world: cruising. But not just any cruising. Today, we’re talking about non-U.S.-owned cruise lines that Canadians can book with confidence, knowing their dollars aren’t supporting American corporate giants.
Canadians are banding together in record numbers, not just to skip trips to the U.S., but to actively avoid American-owned companies. And for cruise lovers like me - who live for that ocean breeze, fresh seafood onboard, and the thrill of waking up in a new port — this doesn’t mean giving up what we love. It just means choosing better.
Thankfully, the world is full of spectacular, non-U.S.-owned cruise companies. From the canals of Europe to the wilds of the Arctic and the jungles of South America, these cruise lines offer all the magic - without compromising your values.
Let’s start right here at home. Based in Kingston, Ontario, this small ship cruise line is proudly Canadian and sails exclusively within Canadian waters. Think heritage-style vessels, charming staterooms, and leisurely journeys through the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. It’s perfect for a patriotic, peaceful getaway.
Le Boat (Canada & Europe)
If you love the idea of slow travel, Le Boat offers self-drive canal boat vacations in Ontario’s Rideau Canal as well as across France, Ireland, and Italy. No boating license required — just a sense of adventure. It’s a wonderful way to explore at your own pace, especially for families and couples.
CroisiEurope (France)
Europe’s largest river cruise company is family-owned and refreshingly affordable. Whether you’re cruising the Rhine, Danube, Douro, or Seine, you’ll enjoy excellent food, cultural excursions, and smaller ships that dock in the heart of charming towns.
Amadeus River Cruises (Austria)
Elegant, intimate, and rich in European tradition, Amadeus offers refined river cruising without the glitz and gimmicks. Their vessels sail through Austria, Germany, Hungary, and beyond, with gourmet cuisine and polished service.
Scenic & Emerald Cruises (Australia)
These sister companies, owned by the Scenic Group, cover both ends of the luxury spectrum. Scenic offers 6-star, all-inclusive luxury with butler service and exquisite dining. Emerald is its more affordable sibling, still stylish and modern but at a friendlier price point. Both operate river cruises across Europe and Southeast Asia and have launched superyachts that sail the Med and Red Sea.
Variety Cruises (Greece)
This boutique line operates yachts with fewer than 70 guests, offering intimate experiences in the Greek Isles, the Seychelles, West Africa, and more. Expect relaxed vibes, fresh Mediterranean cuisine, and off-the-beaten-path itineraries.
Blue Lagoon Cruises (Fiji)
Locally owned and loved, Blue Lagoon Cruises offers unforgettable island-hopping in the Yasawa Islands. With just 34 cabins on board and a strong emphasis on Fijian culture, this is barefoot luxury at its finest.
Hurtigruten Expeditions & Havila Voyages (Norway)
Both Norwegian companies are deeply rooted in sustainability. Hurtigruten is the go-to for Arctic and Antarctic exploration, while Havila operates along the stunning Norwegian coast with a new fleet of all-electric and LNG-powered ships. These are ideal for eco-conscious travellers looking for true adventure.
Aqua Expeditions (Singapore/Peru)
For the luxury eco-traveller, Aqua’s small ships operate on the Amazon River, the Mekong, the Galápagos, and even Indonesia’s Raja Ampat. Expect private chef-prepared meals, expert naturalists, and stylish suites that feel like a floating five-star lodge.
Swan Hellenic (UK/Cyprus)
A heritage cruise line reborn with a modern twist, Swan Hellenic offers cultural and polar expedition cruises. Think onboard historians, naturalists, and thoughtful itineraries that prioritize learning and connection over pool parties.
Star Clippers & Sea Cloud Cruises (Sweden & Germany)
If your idea of luxury is canvas sails, teak decks, and the romance of the sea, look no further. Star Clippers and Sea Cloud Cruises offer tall ship experiences that harken back to a bygone era — but with all the creature comforts.
Cruising with Integrity
The cruise industry has long been dominated by U.S.-owned giants, but Canadians now have compelling alternatives. Whether you’re sailing down a European river, island-hopping through the Aegean, or exploring the Arctic Circle, these companies offer ethical, exciting, and enriching journeys — with no stop in Miami required.
So if you're a Canadian cruiser with a conscience, you can still chase sunsets and seabreezes. Just do it with a cruise line that shares your values. Because where we go — and who we go with — matters more than ever.
Happy sailing. See you on deck!
