Following on from my article last week where I talked about the joys of travelling within Canada, this week we're taking it a step further - exploring international destinations where Canadians can still see the world, connect with culture, and spend ethically, all while continuing to avoid travel through or to the United States.
There is a distinct shift happening across our nation. Many Canadians, frustrated by the direction of U.S. politics and culture, are making conscious choices to avoid crossing the border altogether. It goes beyond skipping a trip to New York or Miami. There is a growing sentiment to avoid spending our hard-earned Canadian dollars on anything U.S.-owned or operated - from cruise lines to airlines, resorts to retail.
It’s not a boycott, exactly. It’s a values-driven pivot. A moment of pause. Canadians are asking, “Where can I go that aligns more with what I believe in? Where can I spend my money where it matters?”
Fortunately, the options are as exciting as they are ethical.
Portugal: A Personal Favourite
Let me start with a destination close to my heart. I spent New Year’s Eve in Portugal recently and found it absolutely magical. Lisbon buzzes with light and energy. Porto is soulful and creative. The Algarve, with its golden cliffs and slow pace, is ideal for a relaxing break. The food is fresh, the people are warm, and the value for money is exceptional. Best of all, Canadians can fly direct - no U.S. transfer required.
For those seeking relaxation and wellness, stay in the Algarve at a coastal resort like Vila Vita Parc or the charming boutique stay of Casa Mãe in Lagos. Foodies should explore the Time Out Market in Lisbon and take a wine tour through the Douro Valley.
The Azores
Just a five-hour flight from Toronto, these Portuguese islands in the middle of the Atlantic are often overlooked. But those in the know rave about crater lakes, lush hikes, and geothermal springs. The Azores offer European flair with a hint of Hawaii — at a fraction of the price.
Base yourself in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island and explore the Sete Cidades twin lakes and Furnas hot springs. Stay at the eco-friendly White Exclusive Suites or the cozy Grand Hotel Açores Atlântico.
Costa Rica
Pura vida isn’t just a phrase — it’s a way of life. Costa Rica ticks all the boxes for Canadians looking for eco-conscious travel. Direct flights, abundant wildlife, world-class surf, and sustainability at its core.
Stay at Arenal Springs Resort for volcano views, or opt for a luxurious beachfront stay in Nosara or Santa Teresa. Join a sloth sanctuary tour, hike through Monteverde Cloud Forest, or kayak through mangroves in Tortuguero.
Colombia
Once off-limits for many, Colombia has reinvented itself. Cartagena’s colonial streets feel like a film set, while Medellín’s eternal spring climate and innovative spirit attract curious travellers. It’s vibrant, colourful, and considerably more affordable than many Caribbean islands.
For a boutique stay, consider Casa San Agustin in Cartagena or the Medellín boutique hotel Patio del Mundo. Take a cooking class, tour a coffee farm, or ride the city’s iconic cable cars.
Mexico — Beyond the big resorts
Oaxaca, San Cristóbal de las Casas, and Merida are culturally rich, locally run, and far removed from the resort towns that dominate the coast. These cities offer immersive, authentic experiences that allow your money to support artists, chefs, and independent businesses.
Stay at colonial-style hotels like Casa Oaxaca or Rosas & Xocolate in Merida. Enjoy cooking classes, artisan markets, and ancient ruins like Monte Albán and Uxmal.
Morocco
Exotic, accessible, and refreshingly affordable, Morocco is a feast for the senses. Think spice markets, desert sunsets, and blue-washed towns like Chefchaouen. It’s the perfect escape when you want something different, and it’s easily reached via Europe without ever needing to transit through the U.S.
Explore Marrakech’s souks and stay in a traditional riad like Riad Yasmine or El Fenn. Head into the Sahara for a night in a desert camp, or visit coastal Essaouira for fresh seafood and whitewashed alleyways.
The Balkans: Croatia, Montenegro, and Albania
With sparkling coastlines, historic cities, and delicious food, the Balkans are Europe’s best-kept secret. Canadians can charter yachts, hike coastal trails, and dine like royalty — all at a price that keeps your credit card smiling.
Dubrovnik, Split, and Kotor are showstoppers, but don’t miss Albania’s Riviera or Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia. Stay in cliffside hotels like Hotel Bellevue in Dubrovnik or chic guesthouses along Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor.
Where Else? Other non-U.S. options include:
-
Slovenia – green, serene, and seriously underrated
-
Georgia (the country) – a wine and hiking haven
-
New Zealand – for when you want to go far, but feel right at home
-
South Africa – Once there the CA$ goes far!
Choosing where you spend your travel money is more powerful than ever. When we deliberately choose destinations that reflect our values, we’re not just avoiding somewhere — we’re supporting something. Whether it’s a family-run guesthouse in Portugal, a rainforest lodge in Costa Rica, or a seaside taverna in Croatia, your vacation can be more than just a break. It can be a statement.
Canada is waking up to the idea that where we go matters. Let’s go somewhere worth it — somewhere that welcomes us as warmly as we want to feel.
Next week I will break down Cruises, non USA owned and operated.
