Nestled within the rugged landscapes of Northern Ontario, you'll find Go-Mar Falls, which is believed to be the tallest waterfall in the province.

Also known as Gorge Creek Falls, this waterfall stands an impressive 85 metres near Thunder Bay in the Greenstone region, which is the area along the east side of Lake Nipigon and is mostly travelled by locals and sport fishermen chasing world-class pike and lake trout.

This awe-inspiring natural wonder offers more than just a breathtaking view—it also provides an unforgettable hiking experience that draws adventurers year-round, particularly in the vibrant colours of fall.

The Hike to Go-Mar Falls

The journey to Go-Mar Falls begins with a 2.5-kilometre hike that winds through a rugged terrain known for its steep-sided, flat-topped mesas, a unique topography shaped by vertical erosion. The trail, which starts just off Highway 11 near a natural gas station about 35 kilometres north of Nipigon, offers a moderately challenging route. Half of the hike follows a hydrocut with a moderate gradient, making it accessible to most hikers. While the trail is generally well-marked by local hikers, there are moments where the path may be hard to pick up, adding a touch of adventure to the experience.

Once you reach the falls, you’ll be rewarded with the sight of water cascading down steep cliffs, a dramatic display that is particularly striking in the fall when the surrounding landscape bursts into a symphony of autumnal hues. The falls stand as a testament to the untouched beauty of Superior Country, an underappreciated region that is well worth exploring.

Exploring Superior Country

Go-Mar Falls is just one of the many hidden treasures in Superior Country, a region often overlooked by visitors but cherished by locals and sport fishermen. For those looking to extend their adventure, the Palisades Trail offers a longer, 10-kilometre out-and-back hike along the top of a mesa, where you’ll encounter stunning views and even carnivorous plants. This pairing of short and long hikes provides an excellent way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Northern Ontario.

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just looking for a new adventure, Go-Mar Falls and the surrounding trails offer a perfect escape into nature. The fall season, with its crisp air and vibrant colours, is an especially magical time to visit, providing a picturesque backdrop to one of Ontario’s most remarkable natural wonders.
