If you're embarking on the beautiful journey of parenthood this year and seeking inspiration for the perfect name for your little one, Statistics Canada has unveiled the 20 most popular baby names from 2023.

For the eighth consecutive year, Olivia has secured the coveted title of the most popular name for baby girls in Canada in 2023, while Noah once again claimed the top spot as the most common name for baby boys.

Emma also remained the second most popular name for girls, while Liam once again claimed the second place for boys.

Theodore replaced William in the third spot for boys, while Charlotte held steady at third place for girls. Leo and Amelia both held their ranking in the fourth spots. William dropped down to the fifth spot, with Sophia retaining her position at number five.

Rounding out the top ten for boys were Oliver, Lucas, Thomas, Benjamin, and Jack. For girls, the top ten were completed by Mia, Chloe, Mila, Sofia, and Alice.

According to Statistics Canada, the data is sourced from its Canadian Vital Statistics Birth Database, which collects demographic information annually from provincial and territorial vital statistics registries for all live births in Canada, as well as the Québec Pension Plan’s List of Baby Names in Quebec.

In 2023, a total of 351,878 babies were born in Canada.

“The number of live births in Canada in 2023 was virtually unchanged from 2022, with 351,477 births,” Statistics Canada reported. “This follows a 5.0% decline in births from 2021 to 2022. While birth patterns fluctuated between 2019 and 2022, the overall number of births has been steadily declining since 2017.”

As we look back on 2023, the year’s top baby names reflect not just trends, but the timeless choices that resonate with families across Canada. From beloved classics to rising stars, these names will shape the stories of a new generation for years to come.
