Ottawa's enchanting Rideau Canal Skateway has officially opened, welcoming eager skaters after a hiatus of nearly two years.
Each winter, the National Capital Commission (NCC) transforms the historic Rideau Canal into the world's largest natural skating rink, stretching over 7.8 km through the heart of the National Capital.
Starting (or ending) downtown and winding its way to Dow’s Lake, the Rideau Canal features a number of Beavertail stands where skaters can enjoy delectable treats and hot chocolate, while Dunrobin Distilleries serve boozy drinks to those 19 years and older.
Non-skaters are welcome to walk along the edges of the skateway (away from the skaters) or the pathways alongside the Rideau Canal.
In order to open, Ottawa Tourism says the ice must be 30 cm thick. This means there needs to be about 10-14 straight days of -10 to -20 degree Celsius days in order for the quality of the ice to meet the standards of safe skating.
According to the NCC, the Rideau Canal Skateway is currently only open between the Pretoria Bridge and the Bank Street access points.
The skating season typically runs from January to early March, weather permitting. And when it's open, the Skateway is free and open to all, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rideau Canal in winter becomes the pride of the National Capital, a signature destination steeped in beauty and tradition.
Make sure to check out the NCC's website for updates on which parts of the rink are open, access points, amenities, and more.
