Not only is Ontario home to the province's tallest tree, but it is also home to Canada's oldest maple tree.

Nestled within the serene beauty of Pelham, Ontario, lies a hidden gem that transcends time and captures the essence of Canada's rich natural heritage—the Comfort Maple Conservation Area.

Spanning a modest 0.5 acres in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula, this enchanting spot beckons visitors with promises of awe-inspiring history, breathtaking landscapes, and a profound connection to nature.

At the heart of this picturesque sanctuary stands the Comfort Maple, a majestic sugar maple tree that has stood the test of centuries. Believed to be over 500 years old, as estimated by the Ontario Forestry Association in 1975, this ancient giant stands tall at approximately 24.4 meters (80 feet), boasting a trunk circumference of 6 meters (20 feet).

Its towering presence symbolizes not just the strength of Canada's natural wonders but also the enduring traditions rooted in our land.

The story of the Comfort Maple traces back to a time when the area was densely forested with hardwoods. The tree's impressive size and shape suggest that the surrounding forest was cleared during its youth, likely for agricultural purposes.

The land on which the Comfort Maple proudly resides was part of the Comfort family's acquisition in 1816, adding layers of historical significance to its legacy.

What truly sets the Comfort Maple apart is not just its age but also the dedicated efforts made to preserve its grandeur. Struck by the tree's magnificence, Earl Hampton took the initiative to set aside a portion of land to protect this natural marvel.

This act of foresight was further championed by Edna Hampton, who generously donated the tree and its surrounding land to the Niagara Region Conservation Authority (NRCA) in 1961.
