Canada has struck back against US tariffs with a comprehensive list of its own counter-tariffs.

The Canadian government announced it is now moving forward with 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of imported goods in response to US President Donald Trump's decision to impose sweeping 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods.

"This was not the outcome Canada hoped for – but we must respond in order to protect our economy and Canadian jobs," the government said.

The first phase of Canada’s response imposes tariffs on $30 billion worth of US imports, effective at 12:01 am on March 4, 2025. The list includes products such as orange juice, peanut butter, wine, spirits, beer, coffee, appliances, apparel, footwear, motorcycles, cosmetics, and certain pulp and paper products.

It's important to note that these tariffs apply specifically to goods originating from the US, as defined by the 'Determination of Country of Origin for the Purposes of Marking Goods (CUSMA Countries) Regulations.' This ensures that the tariffs target products truly manufactured in the US.

The government also announced that if the US persists with unjustified tariffs on Canada, it plans to impose additional countermeasures on $125 billion worth of US imports. These measures will be drawn from a list of goods currently open for a 21-day comment period, bringing the total value of Canada’s countermeasures to $155 billion. The list includes items such as electric vehicles, fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, dairy, electronics, steel, aluminum, trucks, and buses.
