Acknowledging and celebrating the significance of older professionals, Canada's Top 100 Employers recently revealed their much-anticipated list of the 'Top Employers for Canadians Over 40' for the year 2024.
This annual competition, which traces its roots back to 2001, has undergone its own evolution. Initially known as the "Top Ten Employers for Experienced Workers," it later expanded its scope to become the comprehensive and inclusive "Top Employers for Canadians Over 40" in 2010. The winners for 2024 were unveiled on November 30, 2023.
Behind the Scenes: Selection Criteria
The selection process involves evaluating employers on multiple criteria. From offering specialized programs for older workers to actively recruiting individuals aged 40 and above, these companies go the extra mile. Human Resource policies are scrutinized to ensure they consider the unique concerns of seasoned professionals, including recognizing outside work experience in determining vacation entitlement.
Pensions and retirement planning take centre stage, with a focus on reasonable employer contributions, assistance with retirement and succession planning, and opportunities for retirees to stay socially connected. Health coverage and benefits for employees after retirement, coupled with innovative programs like mentorship and phased-in retirement, are a large part of what makes these employers stand out.
"The best employers in this field give staff the tools they need to plan securely for the future, along with vehicles to shore up their retirement savings," said Richard Yerema, executive editor of the project. "It's the essence of the employment contract at the end of the day, and helping employees understand how to save better is invaluable."
