Nestled in the charming village of Lyndhurst, Ontario, the historic Lyndhurst Bridge stands as a testament to the enduring craftsmanship of the mid-19th century.

Recognized as Ontario’s oldest stone bridge, this remarkable structure was constructed between 1856 and 1857, a full decade before Confederation.

According to the Ontario Heritage Trust, the Lyndhurst Bridge was designed by John Roddick, an employee of a prominent local mill owner at the time. The bridge was brought to life by contractors Miles Fulford and Simon Ransom.

This picturesque three-span bridge exemplifies masonry arch construction, built from local field stone laid in random courses. Its simple yet elegant design is accented by sandstone wall caps and arch surrounds, and it is distinguished by the curved flare of its end walls and the slightly oblique shape of two of its arches.

In 1986, the Lyndhurst Bridge underwent significant strengthening with the installation of a reinforced concrete interior frame. This restoration preserved its original exterior appearance while ensuring its continued functionality. Today, the bridge remains in regular use, a functional piece of history still serving the community.

Visitors to Lyndhurst can still explore the bridge, which spans waters connected to the Gananoque River and the St. Lawrence River. The village itself is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, wildlife watching, and fishing.
