Legality of CBD for dogs in Canada: Health Canada oversees the federal legislation related to cannabis which outlines the legal framework for the production and sale of cannabis products. Currently, there are no approved cannabis or CBD prescription drugs for animals, which is the safest pathway for veterinarians to prescribe cannabis to animals. The legal pathway for access to veterinary products under the new Cannabis Act is approved veterinary drugs with cannabis and veterinary health products.

As a dog owner, you always want the best for your furry companion. Whether it’s a delicious meal, a comfortable bed, or a long walk in the park, you strive to keep your pet healthy and happy.

However, sometimes your dog may experience health problems that are difficult to manage, such as anxiety, inflammation, or chronic pain. Recently there's a new kid on the block that claims to work wonders for such issues: CBD.

But exactly what is CBD for dogs and is it safe?

What is CBD oil?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound found in the hemp plant that has been shown to have a range of health benefits for both humans and animals. In recent years, CBD for dogs has become increasingly popular as more and more pet owners discover its potential.

Potential Benefits of CBD for Dogs

CBD has several potential benefits that can help improve your dog’s health and well-being. One of the most well-known benefits of CBD for dogs is its potential ability to reduce anxiety and stress. Whether your dog suffers from separation anxiety, noise phobia, or social anxiety, CBD might help calm their nerves and promote relaxation without making them feel drowsy or lethargic.

It's also claimed CBD can also help reduce inflammation and pain in dogs with conditions such as arthritis or hip dysplasia. By interacting with the endocannabinoid system in the body, CBD can help reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines and increase the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, which can lessen pain and inflammation in a similar way to other pain medications used for dogs.

Additionally, CBD may have neuroprotective properties that can help prevent or treat neurological disorders in dogs, such as epilepsy or seizures.

However, it's essential to state that the current research into CBD use in dogs is very limited. While these studies do show promising results, more work has to be done into exactly how beneficial CBD is and what, if any, side effects it has.

Forms of CBD for Dogs

CBD can be used in a variety of forms for dogs, such as CBD oil, treats, capsules, and topicals. CBD oil is one of the most popular forms, as it can be easily administered to dogs orally or added to their food or water. CBD treats are also a convenient way to give your dog CBD, as they come in various flavours and dosages and can be a tasty snack for your pet. CBD capsules can be a good choice for dogs with more severe health issues that require higher doses of CBD.

CBD topicals, such as balms or creams, can be applied directly to the skin of dogs with skin problems, joint pain, or muscle soreness. CBD topicals can help reduce inflammation and pain in specific areas of the body and can be a non-invasive and natural alternative to traditional medications or treatments.

But before you get carried away and start your dog on CBD, it's important to know that there is a significant lack of data regarding the correct dosage of CBD to use in dogs. In fact, the FDA is still yet to approve its use - so proceed with caution.

Safety of CBD for Dogs

As we have discussed, there is limited data into the safety of CBD use in dogs. While anecdotally it seems safe in low doses, there are concerns about the use of CBD under certain circumstances.

One of which is dogs currently on other medications. CBD has been shown to affect liver enzymes, potentially interfering with the way that other drugs are metabolized in the body. Therefore, if your dog is on any long term medication it's best to steer clear or CBD for now.

The side effects of CBD in humans include a dry mouth, lowered blood pressure and drowsiness. It's therefore possible that dogs may experience similar symptoms.

The quality of CBD you use is also very important. Not all CBD is created equally - look for CBD products that are third-party tested and have a certificate of analysis (COA) that shows the CBD and THC content, as well as any contaminants or pesticides. Always choose broad or full spectrum CBD over isolates.

As with any new addition to your dog's routine, start slow and monitor closely for any signs of adverse reaction. If in doubt, talk to your vet about the use of CBD in your dog.

Conclusion:

While CBD for dogs claims to have many benefits, and initial studies show promising results, it's important to know that CBD use in dogs is still in its infancy. More research needs to be done into possible long term side effects and the most effective doses to use in dogs.
