Canada announces new round of tariffs on more US goods

Another round of tariffs is here, as Canada strikes back against US trade policies with new duties on nearly $30 billion in American goods.

Canada is raising the stakes in its ongoing trade battle with the US, imposing a fresh round of counter-tariffs worth nearly $30 billion. The federal government announced Wednesday that these new tariffs—targeting steel, aluminum, and a range of additional American imports—are in direct response to US President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade restrictions.

Set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on Thursday, the latest tariffs include a 25% duty on $12.6 billion in steel products and $3 billion in aluminum. An additional $14.2 billion worth of American goods will also face tariffs, further tightening economic relations between the two nations.

This move follows Canada’s initial wave of retaliatory tariffs imposed last week after sweeping US duties on Canadian imports took effect on March 4. The escalating trade war nearly intensified further—Trump reportedly considered increasing tariffs to 50% just a day before Canada’s announcement. However, he ultimately backed down after Ontario Premier Doug Ford suspended a 25% duty on electricity exports to certain US states.

With tensions running high, these latest countermeasures mark another chapter in the Canada-US trade dispute. To learn more about the government’s latest trade actions and their potential impact, visit the official Canadian government website.
